SAINT JOHN - The province will invest$1,126,000 to buy three pieces of major medical equipment at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

“This funding will include $518,000 for a new digital fluoroscopy diagnostic imaging unit used to perform general and specialized exams,” Health Minister Michael Murphy said.

“We will also provide $450,000 for a hydrajust urology table that provides enhanced images during urology operative procedures and $158,000 for a new sterilizer used for operating room instruments and scopes.”

Murphy said the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation will receive an additional $1.846 million this year to buy various medical equipment valued at $5,000 to $100,000 each.

The minister also announced the New Brunswick Heart Centre will receive $300,000 this year to buy a new echocardiography unit.

“This specialized diagnostic equipment is essential for the tertiary cardiology services offered at the heart centre.

“It will replace a unit that is 10 years old and will offer much improved diagnostic capability.”

All of the funding is from the Department of Health’s $13.22-million budget in fiscal 2008-09 for new medical equipment and technology.
