ACADIA/KINGS COUNTY - In the 21-year history of Acadia University's Gunn Baldursson tournament, no New Brunswick soccer team had been able to lay claim to a first-place finish in the tier one division until the Fundy Vito's United under-18 girls turned the trick in July.
Featuring teams from across Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Iceland, the tournament brings together the best women's club teams for a weekend of top-tier competition.
After losing 1-0 to Nova Scotia's top-ranked Valley United in the preliminary round, Fundy found itself up against Valley United in the final. At the 55-minute mark, the tournament's top scorer, Megan Spicer of Sussex, gave Fundy a 1-0 lead, which the backline made stand up, handing Valley United its first defeat of the season and earning Fundy the tournament's silverware.
Kalie Symington of Sussex was named player of the match for her efforts in neutralizing Valley's potent right-wing attack. Spicer was Fundy's top scorer with seven goals over the five games.
Team members also included Lynn Symington of Sussex, Michelle Kidd, Erin Higgins, Kara Johnston, Erica Middleton, Jennifer Bergeron, Kayla Munroe, Alana Mallett, Danielle Jenkins, Jessica Moore, Cara Savoie, Kayla Gallant, Meghan MacDonald, Lyndsey Adams, Chrissy Cusack, manager Vanessa Babineau and coach Kevin Munroe.
