Sussex at Eastern Cdns
From May 9-11, a Sussex club team took part in the Eastern Canadian championships in Moncton. The tournament consisted of 124 teams playing in under- 14/U15 and U16 boys and girls divisions.
Sussex played in the U16 girls division which was the largest in the tournament consisting of 40 teams from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland Labrador and the host province.
“New Brunswick is the only province in Canada that play their high school season in the spring. As a result, all of the other provinces have completed their school seasons in the fall and then move into their club seasons,” coach Michael Swift said.
“Their provincial age class championship would have just finished and then they move on to the Volleyball Canada championships.
“We pieced together our team in the last two weeks while both the junior and varsity teams were completing their high school seasons.
“As the Eastern championship continued, our girls played better and better.
After going 0-3 on the first day, we rebounded to finish second in the power pool of day two.
“Sunday morning we opened with a win over PEI and then lost in the quarterfinals of tier three to a tough team from Nova Scotia.
It was an exciting match with a huge crowd.
“After losing the first set we fought back for a hard fought 25-23 win. It was a great way to finish a terrific experience for these young players.”
The team consisted of Larissa Verhoeven, Kendra Sabine, Annie Blanchard, Krista Snider, Stephanie Tays, Lynn Symington, Emily Vincent, Becky Marks, Jade Baxendale, Brittany Wallace, Sarah Holt, Madeline Belding and Sarah Meehan.
