QUISPAMSIS More than 60 competitors representing 11 Maritime fencing clubs participated in the recent New Brunswick championships held at Kennebecasis Valley High School.

Michael Dobbelsteyn of Dutch Valley near Sussex came close to the champion title several times with silver in senior foil, cadet foil, cadet epee and bronze in junior foil. Dominic Hey of Grand Bay-Westfield finished with silver in junior sabre and bronze in junior epee and Evan Schriver of Fredericton captured bronze in junior and open sabre.

Carson Marcoux, 16, of Balmoral took the sabre title in three age categories -- senior, junior (under 20) and cadet (under 17). Saint John's Patrick Craig won the junior epee title and earned bronze in both senior and cadet epee.

Thirteen-year-old Jennifer Akerman of Saint John won gold in the women's foil while also capturing bronze in junior foil with clubmate Patrick Creamer of Saint John.

Janel Walsh of Fredericton won bronze in women's foil. Sylvain Duguay, 17, of Beresford defeated Brandon D'Souza,16, of Saint John to claim the junior foil title. D'Souza also won bronze in open foil. Justin LeClair, 15, of Fredericton claimed the championship in cadet foil and bronze medals in cadet sabre and open foil.

Adrian Ives Thurston of New Maryland captured bronze in open and junior epee. Paris Kim of Fredericton won silver in cadet sabre while Simon-Lewis Bishop of Bathurst won bronze.

Chris Balcom of Fredericton captured silver in open epee. Tim McLean of New Maryland was named provincial champion in under 15 epee and finished with silver in under 15 sabre and bronze in cadet epee. Frank Purdy of Oromocto took championship honours in under 15 sabre. Sebastien Lord of Fredericton took silver in under 15 foil and under 15 epee while Gabriel LeMay of Fredericton and Kyle Buckley of Saint John shared bronze in under 15 epee. Galen Ives Thurston of New Maryland and Jean-Remi Laplante of Dalhousie shared bronze in under 15 foil and Thurston also won bronze in under 15 sabre.

Bronze medals in under 13 foil went to Adam Godlewski and Kyle Buckley of Saint John. In the adult novice foil event, Saint John fencers captured all the medals; the gold went to Anne Bardou, silver to Diane Raiche-Phillips and bronze honours were shared by Elena Redkina and Jessica McNeill.
