The Sussex Skating Club held its annual potluck and awards banquet April 20 at the 8th Hussars Sports Centre. After the dinner and the annual general meeting many of the skaters received recognition for their skills, spirit and dedication to the sport.

The BMO Financial award for CanSkater of the year went to Malin Smith. Megan Charlton and Rachel Corbett were named CanSkate champions.

The following CanSkaters were recognized for most badges passed: MacKenzie Boyd, Megan Snyder, Nicole MacDonald, Lauren McDermott, Madison Homan, Kurt Keays, Gianna DeLong, Colton Baskin, Malin Smith, and Alysha Miller.

The award for program assistant in the CanSkate division went to Patrick Stockdale and CanSkate helper to Bryanna Lagace.

In the junior-intermediate division, the most improved award went to Andrew MacMillan and Madison Malone, and the most improved senior was Kate Brenan.

Most tests were passed by Kelsey Crowe in the junior-intermediate division and Lauren Stockdale in the senior.

For sportsmanship, the awards went to intermediate skater Madeline Webb and senior skater Kendall Bacon.

Geena Oxford was chosen as the STARSkate athlete and Allyson MacDougall as the all around skater.

The competitor of the year was Lauren Stockdale. Anna Miller was the skater of the year in the junior-intermediate division and Patrick Stockdale was the senior who received this award.

The coaches choice award went to graduating skater Alicia Friars. Lauren Stockdale was presented with an award of merit for her achievements this year, including getting her gold skating skills.

Julie Corbett was honoured with the CanSkate coach award for the region.

The region 4 STARSkate team (Kate Brenan, Kendall Bacon, Geena Oxford and Allyson MacDougall), the provincial STARSkate team (Geena Oxford, and Allyson MacDougall), and the developmental A and eastern challenge team (Lauren and Patrick Stockdale) were presented.

On a different note, awards were given for the ice show program cover design: Best design - Allyson MacDougall, imagination and creativity - Riaan O'Neill, honourable mention - Geena Oxford, Madison Malone, and Kate Brenan.

Graduating skaters Alicia Friars, Jaclyn Bacon and Kirsten Graham were presented with gifts and wished all the best in their future endeavours.

Sandy Oxford wil be returning as president of the board for next year and members Jackie MacDougall, Sara Veysey (in new position of vice-president), Stacey Charlton, Dawn Tabor, Barbara MacMillan and Michelle Simpson will also be staying on.

The board welcomed Margie Duchesneau as the new treasurer. Sara Veysey received a volunteer award for her years of filling the role of treasurer and out-going member Kim Graham was honoured for her years of service in various positions on the board.

Spring Skate

Members of the Sussex Skating Club attended Spring Skate in Moncton April 11-13 and brought home two medals.

Meghen Bulmer won gold in juvenile A women and silver in introductory interpretive. Lauren Stockdale placed fifth in pre-novice women and Allyson MacDougall was sixth in senior bronze women.
