To the editor:

Reading the tragic news of yet more death and injury exacted by alcohol, one wonders how much longer this mayhem on our roads will continue, not to mention broken homes and ruined lives.

Alcohol is a dangerous drug and yet it can be purchased freely with no questions asked.

The advice to “drink responsibly” parlayed by the liquor industry is worse than useless because many cannot drink responsibly. They are the victims of a society that has not yet reached maturity and is unwilling to accept the idea that this dangerous drug should be banned from a civilized community.

I am afraid that the “social drinker” must take a great deal of responsibility for the many ruined lives in our society today and in the past. I do have a hard message: for the sake of others, foreswear this dangerous drug.
