Sussex - When it comes to awards, this year has been a successful one for the Kings County Record.

Former editor Gisele McKnight recently returned from Detroit with an award for outstanding editorial writing from the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors June 25-29.

She was one of 12 editorial writers the group honours each year as their Golden Dozen. Editors from the U.S., Canada, Scotland, England and Australia attended the conference this year. Of note, five of the 12 winners this year are Canadian.

This is the second time McKnight has been honoured as a member of the Golden Dozen.

In 2006, she travelled to Oklahoma City for their conference and awards ceremony.

McKnight’s winning editorial this year was the same one chosen by the Atlantic Community Newspapers Association as their best national editorial, entitled Parole is not for Everyone.

It dealt with the parole issues facing both Robert Latimer and local butcher George Moore. Latimer had been denied parole 14 years after the compassionate killing of his 12- year-old severely disabled daughter, while Moore had been granted accelerated parole after his 2002 conviction on multiple drug charges, only to re-offend.

The honour from the ISWNE brings this year’s number of awards to 11—eight Atlantic, two national and one international—for the Record and its staff.
