Sussex-area under-13 players Ellen Sharp, Geena Oxford, Madison Urquhart and Jill Armstrong prepare for a game with Team N.B.

Several Sussex-area players participated in recent age-class 2008 Aliant Cup soccer tournaments.

Bart Pijnenburg and Andrew Baker were members of Team N.B. which captured the silver medal for under-14 boys in Halifax June 29. Bart's father Rinie was the team's head coach.

New Brunswick lost 1-0 to Nova Scotia in the final. Baker was chosen the N.B. player of the match.

"Bart and Andrew played really well and showed if you work hard you can achieve a lot," Rinie said. "Sussex can be proud to have such athletes in their community."

Team N.B. posted two wins and one loss in the round-robin. The boys outscored Prince Edward Island 3-0, blanked Newfoundland and Labrador 2-0 and lost 2-0 to Nova Scotia.

In the U13 girls tournament at Moncton, among the N.B. members were four Kings County Soccer Association players (Geena Oxford, Madison Urquhart, Ellen Sharp and Jill Armstrong) and one assistant coach/manager (Sandy Oxford).

The team recorded a fourth-place finish, losing 1-0 to PEI in the bronze medal match. Oxford was chosen as her squad's player of the game. In the 3-1 semifinal loss to Nova Scotia, Sharp (N.B. keeper) was the player of the game.

Urquhart nabbed game star honours in the 5-1 loss to PEI in the round-robin. New Brunswick also lost 5-1 to N.S. and 7-0 to Newfoundland and Labrador.
