
UNBSJ awards dominated by members of v-ball teams

SAINT JOHN -
Three volleyball players and a multi-sport star took home the top awards at the University of New Brunswick Saint John athletics banquet.
Scott Hachey of Quispamsis, who was an important member of the Seawolves soccer and basketball teams, was named the male athlete for the year.
Katie McKeown of Plaster Rock, a member of the women's volleyball team, was named the female athlete of the year for her excellence in that sport.
Michelle Cyr of Wirral, a fifth-year setter with the women's volleyball team and Colin Chambers of Sussex, a third-year outside hitter, won the academic athlete of the year awards.
Alex Walsh of Saint John (men's basketball), Josh Smith of Miramichi (men's basketball) and Jill Balser of Digby, N.S. (women's basketball) received four-year awards.
Five-year awards went to women's volleyball players Rachel VanBeelen of Saint John, Cyr and Jen Huttges of Saint Martins.
The department's appreciation award went to Paul Gallagher, varsity program assistant, while an appreciation certificate was awarded to the students' representative council and Colin MacKenney, student therapist.
Chambers also took home the UNBSJ students' representative council recognition award while Huttges won the RC booster club team spirit award.
Erin Dickson of Plaster Rock and Chika Ikejiani of Quispamsis earned the ARC memorial athletic bursaries.
The UNB Alumni Association presentations for graduating student-athletes were handed to Allison Richard of Quispamsis, VanBeelen, Cyr, Huttges, Balser, Pauline Waggott of Saint John, Erin Holtz of Russell, Ont., Cassandra O'Neill of Saint John, Chambers, Smith, BJ Young of Saint John, Walsh, Adam Wilkins of Saint John and Matt McGill of Quispamsis.
Women's soccer - Most improved, Kim Brown of Hampton; MVP - Cassandra O'Neill
Men's soccer - Most improved, Colin Johnston of Saint John; MVP - Scott Hachey, Quispamsis.
Women's volleyball - Most improved, Rachel VanBeelen of Saint John; MVP - Katie McKeown of Plaster Rock.
Men's volleyball - Rookie of the year, Mark Dean of Brookfield, N.S.; MVP - Colin Chambers of Sussex.
Women's basketball - Most improved, Sarah Trott of Saint John; MVP - Julie Edwards of Saint John.
Men's basketball - Most improved, Josh Smith of Miramichi; MVP - Alex Walsh of Saint John.
