HAMPTON Brendon Graves, a political science student at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, has been awarded a 2007-08 Sandra Irving Scholarship, valued at $5,000 each.

Graves, a third-year political science student, is a graduate of Hampton High School where he was on the student council and on the school's technical crew for theatrical productions. For the past three years he has been a volunteer hockey coach and a member of the political science and philosophy societies at UNB Saint John.

"The Sandra Irving Scholarship will greatly contribute to my university education and future success by allowing me to spend more time on my studies," said Graves.

"Such a generous contribution to my education will give me a greater ability to give back to the community as well."

The political science program at UNB Saint John trains students to assess government policy decisions and to evaluate the impact those decisions have on populations living in Canada and around the world.

The Sandra Irving Scholarship is awarded annually to political science students at UNB Saint John. The selection committee looks at academic standing, career aspirations and a personal statement in making their decision.

The $5,000 scholarship is named for the donor, a UNB Saint John political science graduate, who created the award.
