Sussex Regional Library is holding an Adopt-a-Book campaign May 23 and 24 and Kings East MLA Bruce Northrup and Sussex Mayor Ralph Carr were the first to adopt two books for the library May 8. Joining them is Ray Watson, chair of the library's board of directors. The tag tree beside them carries new titles waiting for adoption.

The Sussex Regional Library is taking its Adopt-a-Book campaign to a wider audience this spring by taking it to the mall.

Library board members are setting up a "tag tree" at the Gateway Mall May 23 and 24 and will invite people to select a book title to adopt.

Library staff will present a children's program Saturday, May 24 with a puppet show and craft table. They'll also be taking registrations for the library's popular Summer Reading Club for children.

The tag tree is currently set up at the library and the first two titles were adopted May 8 by Sussex Mayor Ralph Carr, who adopted Fatal Tide by David Leach, and Kings East MLA Bruce Northrup, who adopted Extraordinary Canadians: Lord Beaverbrook by David Adams Richards.

People may adopt books in their own names, or in another person's name as a memorial or gift.

"They can pick out a title, make a donation and we'll issue a tax receipt. They can fill out a form with the wording they'd like on the book plaque," said library manager Fennella Brewer, adding the library's goal is for at least 50 book adoptions during the campaign.

Books to be adopted range in price from $8 to $40 and include children's stories, books about New Brunswick history and Canadian politics, cook books and a variety of 2008 fiction and non-fiction titles.

Brewer said it's a great way to build the library's book collection.

In addition to new titles, the library needs to replace some well-worn, frequently-borrowed children's classics such as Dr. Seuss books, she said.

The mall events run from 3-8 p.m. May 23 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 24.
