
LOBA holds 89th sessions


SUSSEX The Ladies Orange Benevolent Association of New Brunswick met for their 89th annual sessions at the Fairway Inn April 17-19.
The opening excises were under the direction of R.W. Sister Doreen Dunfield of Millstream L.O.B.A. #1389, assisted by members from Millstream Valley and Waterford Gems #1407.
The pianist was R.W. Sister Kathryn Bradshaw of St. Martins; soloist for the sessions was Wayne McLaughlin of Rollingdam. Guests who brought greetings were Ralph Carr, Mayor of Sussex; M.W. Brother Jim Bell Grand Treasurer of Canada from Barrie, Ontario; M.W. Sister Evelyn Grant Past Grand Mistress of Canada from Fredericton; R.W. Brother William Petite, Grand Master of the L.O.L. of NB from Darlings Island; R.W. Sir Knight Carson Langille, Grand Master of the Black Knights of NB from Moncton; R.W. Sister Annie Boyle, Past Grand Mistress of PEI; Senior Preceptress Eileen Gillis of Crystal Chapter #13 from Lepreau; Mrs. Wendy Branscome representing the Alzheimer Society from Hampton.
The Friday morning sessions opened with the Grand Mistress Alice Johnson of Rollingdam, presiding. There were three members attending Grand Lodge for the first time. Irene Hicks of Grand Lake #1239 was made an Right Worshipful Honorary member of the Grand Lodge of New Brunswick and the name of Jean Dines of St. Croix #1253 was sent to the Most Worship Grand Lodge for honorary membership.
Visitations Competition was won by first place Dominion, Saint John; second place St. Croix, Rollingdam; third place Waterford Gems, Waterford, The Orange Idol Competition was won by the Executive of Grand L.O.B.A. of NB., second St. Croix Rollingdam and third Dominion, Saint John.
Competitions for 2009 are homemade apron and socks or mitts, which will be given to a charity in the area; another competition will be the Benevolent Drill. The provincial scholarships were awarded to Jordan Steeves sponsored by Orange Lily #681 of Geary NB and Stephanie Mallory sponsored by Waterford Gems of Waterford. The Provincial project of the L.O.B.A. will remain the Alzheimer Society.
A memorial church service was held at the Salvation Army on Friday evening under the direction of Captain Don Rowsell. The banquet was held at the Lion's Den later with Captain Sandra Rowsell as guest speaker. All attending enjoyed a lovely roast beef dinner.
On Saturday the election of officers for 2008-2009 was held. Those elected to serve: Grand Mistress-Lois Goodine of Saint John, Deputy Grand Mistress-May McDonald of Saint John, Junior Deputy Grand Mistress-Lillian Martin of Keswick Ridge, Grand Secretary-Grace Hasson of Central Hampstead, Grand Treasurer-Alberta Clowes of Saint John, Grand Chaplain-Gloria Barter of St. Stephen, Deputy Grand Secretary-Phyllis Brown of Upper Salmon Creek, Deputy Grand Treasurer-Sharon Olsen of Rollingdam, Director of Ceremonies-Marjorie Landry of Riverview, Senior Lecturer-Mary Lemmon of Gaspereau Forks, Deputy Lecturer-Betty Adair of Penobsquis, Grand Junior Director-Jennifer of Moncton, Grand Auditors-Colleen Watson of Fredericton, Jean Lawson of Gaspereau Forks and Eileen Gillis of Lepreau. The next annual meeting will be in April 2009 in Saint John.
