Scout Talk

There have been hundreds of adult volunteers who have spent time working with the Sussex area Scouts Canada groups over the years. Many are Sussex business owners and operators, and have provided not only time, but financial resources as well.
Dave Stewart from Backstage Music was a section leader and a group committee member at 2nd Trinity and 1st Millstream. Myles Hall from W.W. Thorne Insurance is a group committee member with 2nd Trinity. Marc Belliveau from the Sussex Subway is the chief cook and bottle washer for the St. Paul's United Cub Pack. Dale Mercer, manager of the Main Street Irving, is the Group Commissioner for 2nd Trinity. Lou McNamara, manager of CJCW, was a leader with St. Mark's Sussex Corner.
Alfred Smith from Brunswick Denture Clinic was a leader with St. Paul's United. Julie Beers from Mike's Barber Shop was a leader with St. Mark's Sussex Corner. Frank Skaling, a longtime Sussex accountant, was involved with St. Paul's United group committee and Diane Howarth from the Sussex Rite Stop was the treasurer for 2nd Trinity for many years. These are just a few of the many volunteers and local business people who have helped scouting continue to grow in the Sussex area.
I was recently reading a book that was published to celebrate the 75th anniversary of scouting in 1982. I picked a couple of stories that caught my eye. In July, 1958, Sussex hosted the second New Brunswick Jamboree at what is now Princess Louise Park. Twelve-hundred scouting youth and adults spent the week in Sussex taking part in the activities. In 1979, Dr. A.T. Leatherbarrow, from Hampton, was presented with the Scouts Canada Silver Wolf award for his longtime contributions to scouting.
The annual New Brunswick Chief Scout/Queen's Venturer and Scouts Canada Awards Ceremony will take place in Fredericton on Saturday, November 1. It will be at the Legislative Assembly with the Lieutenant Governor presiding. There will be two youth from the Fundy East Area receiving very prestigious Scouts Canada Awards. Braden Gendron is a Cub with the 6th Hampton Cub Pack, and Braden will receive the Scouts Canada Award for fortitude. Matthew Nutter is a Cub with the 1st Kingston Peninsula Cub Pack. Matthew will receive the Jack Cornwall Award, the highest Scouts Canada decoration available for youth. Both of these youth are indeed inspirations to all and are very deserving of these awards. Congratulations to Braden and Matthew from all Fundy East Scouters!
Registration for the 2008/2009 scouting year is fast approaching. All groups should have a membership goal and a plan on how to reach their goal. For the fourth year in a row, the youth registration fee has not increased. The Sussex area Scouts Canada groups all feature excellent youth programs led by well-trained adult volunteers.
