Students prepare for a rehearsal of The Hunchback of Notre Dame last week.

The Sussex Christian School Theatre Arts class is excited to present The Hunchback of Notre Dame this year. The public will not want to miss this humourous presentation of Victor Hugo's classic story, with adaptations by our own Grade 12 student, Brendan Jones.

Set on the streets of Paris, the story begins with a baby being left on the steps of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame. The evil Frollo, Archdeacon of the Cathedral, raises the child, but in obscurity because of his gross disfigurements. He grows up as the bell-ringer, hidden away in the bell tower of Notre Dame.

Life begins to change for Quasimodo when he encounters the young gypsy woman, Esmeralda, during the Festival of Fools. The audience will both laugh and cry as they see how love transforms the lives of these outcasts. Theatre Arts teacher Dan Warzecha is directing this production.

The sanctuary of Sussex Wesleyan Church has proven to be a wonderful venue for the dramas the school has staged over the last five years. Audiences have given high praise for the previous SCS performances of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and its sequel, The Horse and His Boy, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and, most recently, The Prince and the Pauper.

A new component is being added to this year's performance. Saturday evening's presentation will be a dessert theatre catered by Dobbelsteyn's The Chef's Table. This is intended to be a great opportunity for youth and adults alike to enjoy a special evening out. Tickets may be purchased in advance.

The Sunday afternoon matinee is sure to be the perfect presentation for the whole family. In lieu of a ticket price, a free will offering will be received for this performance.
