Radiothon to benefit Sussex Health Centre

SUSSEX -
A successful hospital fundraising venture will be back on the air Friday, April 4 in an all-day "radiothon," raising funds for a new ultrasound machine for the Sussex Health Centre.
The last time the Sussex Lions Club and CJCW Radio in Sussex worked together on a radiothon with the Sussex Health Centre Foundation in 2005, they raised more than $30,000 for dialysis equipment, said Lions Club member Pat Pearson, co-ordinator of the event. It was part of an extensive community effort to reach a $300,000 goal.
This time they're hoping to raise a similar amount for a new, state-of-the-art ultrasound machine, an essential tool not only for prenatal screening of pregnant mothers but for high-resolution scanning in early cancer detection.
If detected early enough, many cancers can be treated properly and managed. Undetected, cancer can spread to other organs and once that occurs, it's more difficult to treat and the outcome is less certain.
Sussex Lions Club president Carol Danells was diagnosed with cancer in early February and it was discovered by ultrasound, which made the fundraiser "just that much more personal and pertinent for us," said Pearson.
Bringing new equipment to the health centre will give patients better access to newer, more advanced technology than what currently exists at the health centre and they won't have to travel to other cities to get it, she said.
Pearson said Sussex Mayor Ralph Carr will be the first one on air in the radiothon at 7 a.m. and several other volunteers are lined up to take pledges by phone, talk about the need for the equipment or their own experiences with early cancer detection. Song requests will be taken throughout the day.
The radiothon will be on the air April 4 from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on CJCW at 590 on the AM radio dial.
