Lupines, grackles, shovels
Going out the other morning I was startled by all the grackles on the lawn. I must have been just as startling because most of them took flight as soon as I closed the front door. Phew, bird dander everywhere! They're not my favourite bird, but when the sun shines on them just right their feathers shine a glossy purple and/or greenish hue.

IODE celebrates 108 years
MONCTON IODE members throughout New Brunswick held their 108th annual meeting at the Holiday Inn Express April 18-19. President Rita Beattie of Fredericton chaired the sessions.

As I've mentioned before, the school I worked at provides high school students with a diploma in tourism, hotel management, serving or culinary. The students who study tourism and hotel management receive a diploma that is basically the equivalent of a community college diploma in Canada. These students have already received their Baccalauréat; which is their high school diploma and attend my school for a two-year specialized certificate.

Zachary Branscombe scored the highest overall average in Entomology and Pathology at the Maritime College of Forest Technology in Fredericton this year. For his efforts, he was given the Nature Conservancy of Canada award during his April 19 graduation ceremony.
Honour your mother, and not just on Mother's Day
Note to sons and daughters: Sunday is Mother's Day. It's once a year, so there is no excuse for not remembering that person who brought you into the world. Of course the Record over the years has devoted an appropriate amount of space to mothers, some of which follows. Something interesting is seen in an article below dated May 11, 1923 concerning the wearing of a red or white flower on Mother's Day.
Sussex council in brief
At the April 21 Sussex council meeting, Councillor Shelley Bradley told council the Kiwanis Pool building had been vandalized in March. The vandals got inside the building and spray painted graffiti, broke locks and hardware and even lit a small fire. The matter was filed with the RCMP.

The Town of Sussex honoured the following people for their community committment during the 17th annual volunteer recognition reception May 1.
