Keep them in county

If the appalling price of gas has an ever-tightening stranglehold on your summer vacation plans, keep them in Kings County.
A poll released in June by Investors Group said 44 per cent of Canadians say they are likely to change their vacation travel plans this summer because of higher gas prices or airline fuel surcharges. Here in rural KC, it is unlikely that number is much different.
This is the perfect time to re-discover KC and all it has to offer. And best of all, you probably won’t have to bury the needle on your fuel gauge under the ‘E’ to have some summer fun. Supporting local tourism will save you cash.
The economy south of the border is weak and the prices at the pumps here, and there, don’t offer Americans any breaks. It is our responsibility to be there when traditional tourists stay home.
You would be hard-pressed to find a six-year-old who wouldn’t be captivated by a swim under the covered bridge on the Damascus Road in Smithtown or its smooth stones for skipping. It is an ideal way to cool off in the sweltering summer heat.
Those with an eye for photography, or those who simply love nature, won’t regret a minute they spend in Fundy National Park.
Take an afternoon to view what the mural capital of Atlantic Canada has to offer in Sussex or river tours and adventures on the Kennebecasis via the Lighthouse River Centre in Hampton.
Are there other ways not mentioned above to spend your time? Absolutely.
There are places to go that everyone knows, and that special spot to call your own. Get out and explore what KC has waiting around the corner.
And a byproduct of keeping it in KC (perhaps this is a moment of idealism here) just may be a sense of pride in the province for the children and youth who we’ll want to live and work here one day.
